Hi Rapiti

I can relate to what you're saying to some extent - I'm 48 and wanting to have a baby. But after 3 rounds of IVF and several IUI before that, we're trying to accept that it won't happen - mostly due to my age, partly due to sperm issues.
I did get pregnant from my first IVF, but miscarried at 9 weeks. I think the chances of getting pregnant and carrying to term are less than 5% when you're over 45, and reduces of course, as time goes by. (and miscarriage rates, risks of abnormality etc go up). Sorry, that's all pretty depressing!

But of course, it does happen for some people - so a question of how much risk (and expense) you can live with.

If I were you I'd make an appointment with a fertility specialist and find out what your chances are. They can do an AMH test which might help decide - basically tells you what shape your remaining eggs are in.
Good luck, whatever you decide!

Go for it.
If one has a tight knitted accepting non-judgemental support then great go for it!

Re: nearly 50 and want to have another baby

Hello

So nice to see someone near my age (I will be 51 in June) who is considering having a baby.
Life circumstances have made it that I have never found the right man until late in life and now, unfortunately for me, due to my age (and even though I am a very fit and healthy 50 y o), the only option is e.d. IVF... and even this is not straightforward. Of course there is the shock, the grief, the social stigma...
As they have just discovered a 55mm fibroid which is not bothering me or even not distorting my endometrium, but, I am having to go to several specialists, giving me different opinions: yes I need to have a myomectomy/hysteroscopy before any IVF for some, and for others (Spanish centres), this is not necessary.
At my age, not many treatments are offered on the public service - and we have no spare $$ as just bought a house!
So not feeling too high at the moment...

Anyway I thought it would be nice to download and maybe get some support from people who would understand!
smiling N

Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a newer blood test for quantifying ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve refers to the number of viable eggs that are left in a woman's ovaries.AMH is produced directly by the granulosa cells in the follicles. As woman age, their number of follicles decreases and their AMH level decreases with this. Since small ovarian follicles produce this hormone, it is a good indicator of the number of eggs a woman has left and how close a woman is to menopause. This is not a standard test done at your primary doctor’s office, this test is typically used by fertility specialists on patients who are having difficulties conceiving, have certain family histories of ovarian disease, or other reproductive factors.
Because AMH tests measure the protein as it secretes in to ovaries, it is not affected by oestrogen and other hormones, and can therefore be tested at any point in the menstrual cycle and even in patients on birth control pills levels.

People should have a baby at any age they feel comfortable with. However, just give a second thought before you start TTC on how it will affect the child through stages of their life. Toddlers and developmental years of children consume the lot of energy of parents. When the baby arrives the fun truly starts - breastfeeding, staying up late, and all the other things that come with having a baby. Just think, will you be able to handle teenager at the age of 70???

If you think yourself medically fit and even your doctor approves it, then there is no harm in going ahead. Your fitness has to be approved by doctors, its important because egg quality usually deteriorates with growing age. Also, age is only one of many variables that influence fertility. High stress levels can be an obstacle too.

Hope you make decision after considering all the angels.
