PGD
Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis - PGD
PGD is where the genetic status of each embryo can be determined before it is transferred into the uterus. This is done by taking a microscopic biopsy of each embryo.
PGD is indicated where there is a history of genetic medical diagnosis in one or both parents e.g. cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, Huntington Disease etc. Public funding under certain criteria is available for this in New Zealand.
PGD may also be used to detect chromosome disorders associated with advanced maternal age or infertility, although this use of the screening will not attract public funding.
PGD cannot be used for sex selection in New Zealand
Some clinics in New Zealand are licensed to undertake PGD, others have a partnership relationship with Clinics in Australia which offer this service.
